Spanish football star Marcos Senna to build a football school for underprivileged children in South Africa
In its first 3 years of operation, the Project, called Dibanisa (which means ‘add together’ in Xhona) and supported by the Marcos Senna Foundation, will enable 4320 kids of ages 8 to 13 from three different townships (Masakhane Township, Bloom Park and Gansbaai Town) to learn social values, fight violence, racism and AIDS. Through the Marcos Senna Foundation, Dibanisa will build an artificial turf mini football pitch and a school building in a piece of land supplied by the Overstrand Municipality.

“We want Dibanisa to act as a tool to break down barriers and build relationships amongst children from different cultural backgrounds so they are away from crime and drugs”, said Marcos Senna during the press conference. “As our motto says, Dibanisa will help them to go From the streets to the football pitch”, added.

‘Edutainment’, learning through a fun experience

Dibanisa will be much more than just a football school, it will be a place where these children will learn about each other’s shared values. The programme will teach youngsters from an early age to take pride in the areas where they reside so they take responsibility for protecting and beautifying the environtment. Furthermore, as part of developing these youngsters holistically, they will be trained on proper eating habits and be fed with a basic health meal every day while they attend Dibanisa.

This Project also has the goal of identifying suitable volunteers (youth) and introducing them to basic training. This will enable them to implement and manage the different aspects of the programme at school and community level thus taking ownership of the programme.

Dibanisa will be managed locally by Climal Creative, a community development organisation Licensed by the Department of Sport and Recreation of South Africa. Five partners have become part of Dibanisa: The Overstrand Municipality, the Provincial Government of the Western Cape, Grootbos Lodge, Green Futures and adidas. “I will like to thank our partners at Dibanisa and encourage other sponsors to become part of this beautiful Project. Eventhough is not our goal, who knows if the next African football star will rise from Dibanisa”, ended Senna.
